What Sea of Thieves actually is

You and up to three friends crew a ship in a shared pirate world. You pick up voyages, sail to islands, dig up treasure, fight skeletons and krakens and each other, and sell what you carried home. Other crews are out there doing the same thing, and they may or may not want to talk about it.

The defining design choice: there is no gear progression. A veteran with ten thousand hours has the same cutlass, the same pistol and the same ship as you do on your first evening. Everything you earn is cosmetic. What separates crews is seamanship, communication and nerve.

  • Ships are physical: you steer, raise sails, drop anchor, repair holes and bail water, all by hand.
  • A sloop (2 crew) is nimble, a brigantine (3) is the sweet spot, a galleon (4) is a floating fortress that needs real coordination.
  • PvP is always on, everywhere, and that is the source of both the best and worst sessions.
  • Safer Seas exists: a private mode with no other players, reduced payouts, and no risk. It is a legitimate way to learn.
Start in Safer Seas if PvP scares you

A private voyage with no strangers is the intended on-ramp. Learn to sail, learn the islands, then decide whether you want the shared world.

Your first voyage

  1. 1

Learn the ship before you leave the dock

Anchor, sails, wheel, map table, repair planks, bucket, cannons. Everyone on the crew should be able to do all of it.

  2. 2

    Take a simple voyage

A Gold Hoarders treasure map or a Merchant Alliance delivery. Straightforward, quick, and it teaches the sell loop.

  3. 3

Read the wind and the map

Sails catch wind by angle. The map table is your only navigation, there is no minimap and no waypoint.

  4. 4

    Dig, carry, sell

Treasure is a physical object you carry one at a time. Load it, sail to an outpost, hand it to the right company.

  5. 5

Learn to fight your ship, not just your sword

Angling to fire a broadside, dropping anchor to spin, and repairing below deck matter more than aim.

  6. 6

    Decide your policy on strangers

Wave, run, or fight. Any of the three is valid. Not having decided in advance is what loses cargo.

Voyages, companies and events

  • Trading companies each want something different: buried treasure, bounty skulls, cargo, animals, or other crews' loot.
  • World events are visible from the sea (a skull cloud, a storm, a fort) and they draw every crew on the server. That is the point.
  • Tall Tales are the story campaigns: authored, voiced, and genuinely good. Play them in Safer Seas if you want to enjoy them uninterrupted.
  • Emissary flags multiply your payout and mark you as a target. Risk and reward, declared publicly.
  • The Reaper's Bones exist to hunt other crews, and flying their flag says so out loud.
Anything on your deck can be stolen

Loot is only yours once it is sold. A full hold is a reason for someone else to come and get it, and sinking loses everything. Sell in batches.

Crewing well

  • Assign roles in a fight: helm, sails, cannons, repairs. A galleon with everyone on cannons sinks.
  • Call distances and directions plainly. "Sloop, off the starboard bow, closing" is worth more than panic.
  • One person below deck during combat, always. Water sinks ships faster than cannonballs.
  • Anchor turns are the single strongest manoeuvre in the game and take practice.
  • Open crew (matchmaking with strangers) is a coin flip and occasionally the best night you will have.
Losing is not failure

Sinking costs you the cargo, not your progress. Everything you have unlocked is permanent, so a bad fight is a story rather than a setback.

The Sea of Thieves itself

Behind the sandbox is a surprisingly deep mythology: the Sea of Thieves is a place you can only find if it wants you, ruled by the Ferryman who returns the dead, watched over by an ancient order, and haunted by pirates who refused to stay dead.

  • Tall Tales carry the actual story, in chapters, with real voice acting and real endings.
  • The Shores of Gold, Heart of Fire and the pirate legends behind them are the mythic backbone.
  • The Ferry of the Damned is where you go when you die, and it is presented as a place rather than a respawn timer.
  • Later seasons have brought in outside legends, including familiar faces from other pirate fiction, without breaking the tone.

Things that will save you an hour

  • Raise your anchor before you turn. Everything starts there.
  • Keep planks and bananas stocked from every barrel you pass.
  • Sell often. A hold worth two hours is a target worth chasing.
  • Watch the horizon. Ships are visible long before they are dangerous, and running is free.
  • Use the map table together so the whole crew knows where you are going.
  • Be nice on the seas. Half the memorable encounters in this game start with someone playing a hurdy-gurdy instead of shooting.

Where to go next

  • The official site and season pages for what the current content is.
  • The community wiki for company payouts, world event mechanics and Tall Tale walkthroughs.
  • Ask in our Discord. This is a game that turns four people into a crew in about twenty minutes.
