What the One Piece Card Game actually is

You pick a Leader, which is a permanent card representing your captain, and build a 50 card deck in that Leader's colours. The Leader has a power value and a life value, and life is literally a stack of cards from your deck sitting face down beside them.

When you take damage, you do not lose points. You flip a life card into your hand. So the player who is losing gets more cards to work with, and the game is constantly, aggressively swinging. It is the most consistently exciting of the modern Bandai games and the easiest to teach in five minutes.

  • Attacks happen almost every turn from turn two onward. This is not a game you durdle in.
  • The DON!! deck is a separate resource pile, so your main deck never gets clogged with lands or energy.
  • Colours (Red, Green, Blue, Purple, Black, Yellow) each have a personality, and your Leader dictates which you can play.
  • Counter cards let the defending player fight back mid-attack, which keeps both players involved on every swing.

Reading a card

  • Leader: stays in play all game, has Power and Life, and usually an ability that shapes your whole deck.
  • Character: your board. Cost, Power, and often Counter value in the bottom left, plus keywords.
  • Event: one-shot effects, many of which can be played during your opponent's attack.
  • Stage: a persistent field card with an ongoing effect.
  • DON!!: not in your main deck. You draw these from a separate 10 card DON!! deck and use them to pay costs and to boost attacks.
Counter is printed on characters

That number in the corner is what the card is worth if you discard it from your hand to defend during an attack. Half of good play is knowing when a character is worth more as a shield than as a body.

How a turn works

  1. 1

    Refresh

Set your rested cards and DON!! upright again.

  2. 2

    Draw

Draw a card. The player going first skips this on turn one.

  3. 3

    DON!! phase

Add DON!! cards from your DON!! deck to your cost area. You gain more each turn until you reach the maximum of ten.

  4. 4

    Main phase

Play characters and events by resting DON!!. Attach DON!! to a character or your Leader to give it more power for the turn. Use abilities.

  5. 5

    Attack

Rest a character (or your Leader) to attack. You may attack the enemy Leader, or a RESTED enemy character. Your power must meet or beat theirs.

  6. 6

    Counter step

The defender may play counter cards from hand and use blockers to change the maths before damage resolves.

  7. 7

    End

    End-of-turn effects, then pass.

You cannot attack the turn a character arrives

Freshly played characters are summoning sick unless they have Rush. Your Leader, however, can attack from turn one if you can afford to expose them.

Damage to a Leader flips a life card into the defender's hand. Some life cards have a Trigger symbol and fire for free when flipped, which is the game's comeback mechanic and the source of its best moments.

Building a deck

  • Exactly 50 cards plus 1 Leader. Your deck may only contain cards matching your Leader's colour or colours.
  • Up to four copies of a card by name.
  • The DON!! deck is always ten cards and is not part of the 50.
  • A good curve matters enormously because DON!! grows by a fixed amount each turn. Have plays for 2, 3, 4 and 5 cost turns.

Count your counters. A deck with too few counter values loses to any aggressive Leader, because you will have no way to survive a big attack. Experienced players talk about "counter density" the way Magic players talk about mana curve.

Starter decks are the on-ramp

Bandai sells preconstructed decks per crew, and they are legal, complete and cheap. Two of them is a full evening of learning.

Formats and sets

  • Standard constructed with a banned and restricted list that Bandai updates periodically.
  • Sets are numbered OP01, OP02 and onward, plus ST starter decks and EB extra boosters.
  • Organised play is heavily store-based, with regular local events and regional championships.
  • Alternate art and manga-art rares are the chase cards, and the secondary market on them is serious.

Why everyone is shouting

One Piece is the best selling manga in history: a comedy adventure about Monkey D. Luffy, a rubber idiot with a good heart, who wants to be King of the Pirates. It has run since 1997 and it is still going.

  • The card game follows the manga's arcs. Set names, leaders and card art trace the story from the East Blue through Wano and beyond.
  • Your Leader choice is a crew choice: Straw Hats, Whitebeard Pirates, Big Mom Pirates, the Navy, the Revolutionary Army, and dozens more.
  • Colours map loosely onto themes: Red is aggression, Green rests and readies, Blue bounces and controls, Purple manipulates DON!!, Black removes cost, Yellow plays with life cards.
  • You do not need to have read a page of it. But if you have, the deck you want to build has already picked itself.

Collecting it here

One Piece on this platform is collect-only: real cards from real sets, pulled through the apitcg feed, with Romance Dawn as the first shelf.

  • Open packs from the card shop in Discord.
  • Cards land in your public binder on the website.
  • Duplicates feed trading and set completion.
  • Bolts only. Nothing here costs real money.

Where to go next

  • The official One Piece Card Game site has the full rulebook, tutorial videos and the current banned list.
  • The official card list database for searching every printing.
  • Local shops run beginner events with loaner decks. It is a very welcoming scene.
  • Ask in our Discord. Pulling a good leader is the fastest way to start a conversation in there.
